Fire Hazards to Avoid

|

With the holidays quickly approaching, there's definitely one subject that we simply cannot avoid - fire hazards. If you want your celebrations to go off without a hitch and prevent any injuries from befalling your loved ones, keep these holiday safety fears in mind:

Non-working Smoke Detectors

Smoke detectors often go unchecked and that can lead to a dangerous situation in the event of a fire. Each month or so, you should test your unit to make sure that it's working properly, and if it starts beeping to alert you of a low battery, switch out the battery immediately. It's also a good idea to occasionally clean the unit to prevent a malfunction.

Wood-Burning Fireplaces

Who doesn't love a raging fire in the fireplace during the holidays? Keep in mind, however, that is also present a fire hazard. Make sure that nothing is flammable is near the unit, always use a screen for added safety, and check that the fire has been completely extinguished before going to bed.

Those Gorgeous Holiday Candles

Most of us love the appearance and aroma of candles. Be aware, however, that lit candles present a fire hazard, especially when you have pets or small children who could accidentally knock them over. Either keep them out of reach or make sure that nothing flammable is anywhere close in case one falls over.

O, Christmas Tree

No discussion on holiday fire safety would be complete without mentioning Christmas trees. The best plan is to use an artificial tree, but many homeowners and families love the experience of putting in a live one. If you choose this route, be sure to choose the freshest tree you can, set it up at least three feet away from any heat source, and refill its water tray every day.
