How to Control Dust Throughout Your Home and HVAC System

|

As a homeowner, you've probably figured out that controlling dust can be a little tricky. That's because dust comes from not only people, but also pets and outdoors. Here are a few quick suggestions to help you reduce the dust in your home:

Seal Windows and Doors

If your windows and doors aren't properly sealed, dust can slip through the cracks... literally. You can go a long way to fixing this by way of weather stripping, caulk, foam sealant, etc.

Check the Ductwork

If your ductwork has rips or tears, dust will leak out into your home. You can repair these problem areas yourself, or contact an HVAC professional to perform the work for you.

Groom Your Pets

Pet fur and dander are two of the biggest culprits when it comes to breathing issues in your home. You can reduce this problem by grooming your pets on a regular basis.

Change the Air Filter

Your home's HVAC system has an air filter that captures dust and keeps it from being redistributed into the air. Unfortunately, it doesn't take long for them to fill up with dust. To prevent it from becoming ineffectual, be sure to change the filter every 1-3 months.

Switch to Hard Flooring

Not only does hard flooring, whether it's tile, wood, or laminate, often look better than carpets, it's easier to keep free of dust. That's because hard flooring doesn't have fibers that collect dust and other irritants. Just remember to sweep them every few days, and mop once a week.

Use a Quality Vacuum Cleaner

Your vacuum cleaner can be used on either carpet or hard flooring. We suggest that you make sure it's equipped with a HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. This type of filter captures extremely small pollutants to ensure the best air.
